In June 2019, New York City hosted World Pride NYC 2019. This celebration was very significant for NYC because it was not only the 50th anniversary of the 1969 Stonewall riots, but also the first time World Pride was held in the United States.
The theme for this momentous celebration was “Millions of moments of Pride” and was a series of LGBTQ events and celebrations held in the metropolitan NYC area. Working with the non-profit organization Heritage of Pride, this initial concept was inspired by the protest signs during the Stonewall riots, the loud energy of the city itself and the spirited flare of the LGBTQ community.
The celebration was the largest LGBTQ event in history, with an official estimate of five million attending Pride weekend in Manhattan alone, including an estimated four million in attendance at the parade. The twelve-hour parade included 150,000 pre-registered participants among 695 groups.
